Travel Insurance for Africa Backpackers
One of the main requirements to be a part of a Pathfinders expedition is to have proof of adequately comprehensive travel insurance for the duration of your trip. You will not be accepted onto any expeditions without this proof.
Since most of our activities on our expeditions involve some kind of extreme sports, we recommend adventure sports travel insurance cover or something similar that covers you for adventure or extreme sports and safaris.
Adventure Sports Travel Insurance
You’ll need to organise your own travel insurance, so please ensure that you are specifically covered for the following:
Medical Expenses
We recommend you organise medical cover of a minimum of £400 000. Please ensure that your medical travel insurance also includes repatriation (being flown home if required).
Cancellation and Curtailment
How much travel insurance you will need to cover yourself for cancellation and curtailment depends on how much your ticket costs and any other expenses you that you need to pay for up front before joining the expedition. We recommend a minimum of £1,000 for this. If your ticket and your upfront outlay are more expensive than this, then you should increase the amount of cover accordingly.
Adventure Activities / Extreme Sports / Safari
Normal backpacker travel insurance does not cover extreme sports or adventure activities with their standard policies. Since almost all Pathfinders expeditions involve some for of extreme sport, we highly recommend that you take out extra extreme/adventure sports cover. As a guideline, your travel insurance policy should cover you for activities such as white water rafting, bungee jumping, surfing and river canoeing/kayaking.
Travel Insurance cover for travel documents, cash limit and personal liability
This is not mandatory for Pathfinders expedition passengers but is still recommended as a sensible add-on to your backpacker travel insurance. It is up to you to decide on the amount you are covered for in these areas. For more advice, talk to your travel insurance broker or travel agent.
Travel Insurance cover for baggage and personal belongings
This insurance against the loss or theft of your luggage and its contents. This is not mandatory for our expedition passengers but we recommend you take it out for peace of mind. To calculate a reasonable amount for this area of cover, add up the value of your luggage and its contents decide how much their contents are worth. Some travelers choose rather to insure individual items that are of the highest value, for example digital cameras, iPod, etc.
